Field Personnel

More than 2,500 people work in the various roles shown below. These are primarily union positions based at various METRO operating facilities throughout the Houston region. Union employees are paid weekly. Select any tab to learn more about working in that area including compensation information and requirements to apply.

Bus Mechanics (hiring incentive offered)

Bus repair mechanics maintain our bus fleet and ensure on-time performance for our customers.

If you're newly hired into certain bus mechanic job functions and employed with METRO for at least three months, you can begin to earn an incentive of up to $8,000.

Bus Operators (hiring incentive offered)

Newly hired operators with a full Commercial Driver's License and Passenger endorsement (P) can earn an incentive of up to $4,000 ($2,000 after approximately 5 months and an additional $2,000 after approximately 17 months).

Newly hired operators with a Class C driver's license can earn an incentive of up to $2,500 ($1,250 after approximately 5 months and an additional $1,250 after approximately 17 months). To be eligible for this incentive, a full Commercial Driver's License and Passenger endorsement (P) must first be obtained. METRO will pay for you to get your CDL.

If you speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, French, Arabic, or American Sign Language, you’re eligible for a bilingual pay incentive as well.

Facilities Maintenance (hiring incentive offered)

Our facilities maintenance department includes cleaners, mechanics, plumbers and others who keep our facilities in a state of good repair.

If you're newly hired into certain facility maintenance job functions and employed with METRO for at least three months, you can begin to earn an incentive of up to $8,000.

Light Rail Operators

METRO operates three light rail lines in and around downtown Houston. We're always recruiting for light rail operators to support METRO's mission of providing safe, clean, reliable, accessible and friendly public transportation services.

Service Drivers (hiring incentive offered)

Service drivers operate smaller vehicles that don't require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). These vehicles operate on the METRO curb2curb shared-ride service and on select METRO bus routes.

Newly hired service drivers with a Class C driver's license can earn an incentive of up to $2,000 ($1,000 after approximately five months and an additional $1,000 after approximately 17 months).

Technicians

METRO bus and rail technicians provide quality control and servicing so our vehicles continue running well.

Utility Workers

Part of our facilities maintenance department, utility workers service our transit vehicles and facilities to keep our operations running smoothly.

Vehicle Maintenance

In addition to the bus mechanic positions that are eligible for a hiring incentive, we staff other vehicle maintenance positions including mechanics, fabricators and machinists who ensure that our fleet is maintained in a state of good repair.

Administrative Staff

More than 1,500 people work in the various areas shown below. These are non-union positions, all of which are located in the Houston area. Bus Operations

METRO's Bus Operations team provides quality control so we can provide an optimal level of service to communities throughout the region. We employ people across all experience levels in areas such as service planning, scheduling and more. Positions include:

Communications / Marketing

METRO's Communications department functions as an in-house agency for the Authority with divisions that manage traditional and digital marketing, media relations, community engagement, market research, and communication services. The team creates and distributes information about METRO services and initiatives for customers, the community at-large, media outlets and METRO employees. Positions include:

Customer Service

METRO's Customer Service team provides quick, timely and informative responses to questions and comments. We oversee a customer call center and multiple RideStore locations where customers can obtain or reload fare cards, pick up route schedules and more. The METRO Legal department provides legal advice to all departments and the Board of Directors on compliance with various federal, state and local laws. It also represents the agency in litigation. METRO Police Department

The METRO Police Department (MPD) employs people across all experience levels including data analysts, project coordinators, METRO Fare Inspectors and METRO Police Officers.

Operations Management

What is the METRO paid time off (PTO) policy?

For full-time, union employees:

The six month waiting period for paid vacation credits is waived for hourly employees who transfer to salaried status with more than six months of employment with METRO.

Full-time, non-union employees also receive a bank of 80 hours for paid sick leave during the calendar year.

What holidays does METRO observe?

METRO observes nine designated holidays during the calendar year:

Union employees who perform work on recognized holidays earn eight hours of holiday pay at their regular rate, plus pay for actual hours worked on the holiday at the rate of 1.5 times their regular rate of pay. If a holiday falls on an employees' day off, that employee will still receive holiday pay.

Retirement Benefits

Does METRO offer a retirement plan?

Yes. For newly hired, full-time union and non-union employees, METRO offers both of the following:

METRO automatically contributes 2% of your annual salary to your 401(a).

Additionally, if you choose to contribute money to your 457(b) deferred compensation plan, METRO will match your contribution up to 4% and put it in your 401(a). That money will not appear on your paycheck; it's deposited directly in your 401(a) retirement plan.

How do I qualify for retirement benefits?

To receive retirement funds from your 401(a), newly hired, full-time union and non-union employees must meet both of the following eligibility requirements:

Other Benefits

Does METRO offer tuition reimbursement?

Yes. All regular, full-time union and non-union employees are eligible to receive up to $5,000 in tuition reimbursement per calendar year when attending an accredited school. To be eligible, an employee needs to complete six months of employment with METRO prior to the start of the course, degree or certification.

Can employees ride METRO for free?

Yes. All METRO employees receive a transit pass for themselves and a spouse (if applicable). The pass entitles the user to ride the following METRO transit services free of charge at all times:

No, all employees are required to work their regular schedules, on-site at their assigned locations.

Bus Operator Objectives

Safety

At METRO, safety is always our No. 1 priority. Training for newly hired bus operators takes approximately 10 weeks to complete. If you successfully complete your training, you'll be assigned to one of our operating facilities.

Reliability

You must be reliable and maintain a very flexible schedule, with availability to work any schedule, including on weekends and holidays. METRO operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and all bus routes must be covered, as the public expects our buses to be on time.

Customer Service / Public Image

METRO is a service-oriented company and we take customer service very serously. Bus operators are the "face" of METRO. Often, they're the only METRO representatives our riders encounter. That's why it's critical for our operators to exhibit a positive public image at all times by being people-oriented, courteous and friendly. All applicants must possess excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work well with the public.
